The school opened in 1955 as a junior secondary school and among the events that took place on that ceremony was planting a tree as a monument by the Kabaka of Buganda, Sir Muteesa 11. That tree is still visible as you enter through the main gate in front of the Mosque.

Gombe Secondary School has introduced practical skills teaching in four trades, namely Computer applications (ICT), Bakery and Pastry, Commercial artefacts and farming. In line with the Uganda Ministry of Education program, a learner is introduced to all the four trades in Senior one, then he/she chooses one in which they are examined in Senior three and issued with a certificate by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT).
This arms the learners with practical skills which enable them to employ themselves at any time instead of waiting at home for possible hiring by employers and yet jobs in public and private institutions are not enough for all candidates.
The Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) plays a crucial role at Gombe Secondary School by assessing and certifying the practical skills acquired by students under the new Lower Secondary Curriculum (LSC) in Uganda.
